EXCLUSIVE: Episodes Former student Kathleen Rose Perkins stars opposite Peyton Elizabeth Lee in upcoming Disney + comedy series Doogie Kameāloha, MD, a Doogie Howser MD restart from how I Met Your Mother and Fresh off the boat former Kourtney Kang and 20th Television, part of Disney Television Studios.
Written by Kang and located in present-day Hawaii, Doogie Kameāloha, MD reinvents Neil Patrick Harris’ half-hour medical drama with a feminine head. It follows Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha (Lee), a 16-year-old mixed-race girl who is juggling a nascent medical career and teenage life. Guiding Lahela – and complicating matters as well – are her family, including her Irish spitfire mother Dr. Clara Hannon (Perkins), who is also the hospital’s chief of staff and supervisor at Lahela, and her Hawaiian father “Local Boy” who has difficulty accepting that his daughter is no longer his granddaughter.
Peyton Elizabeth Lee to star in female-directed ‘Doogie Howser’ reboot on Disney +
Doogie Kameāloha, MD opts for a dual gender exchange as part of its women’s empowerment theme. In Doogie Howser, created by the late Steven Bochco and David E. Kelley, Doogie’s father is a doctor working in the same hospital as his son; Doogie’s mother is originally a housewife.
The role reunites Perkins and Kang, who worked together on ABC / 20th TV’s Fresh off the boat. Perkins returned as Mey-Mey from 2015 to 2019; Kang was co-executive producer from 2015-17.
Bochco’s widow, Dayna Bochco, and her son, Jesse Bochco, are executive producers of the reboot, alongside Kang, Jake Kasdan and Melvin. March 20 Television is the studio.
Perkins is best known for her five-season run with Matt LeBlanc in the Showtime comedy Episodes. She recently starred in Netflix’s Coming of Age series I don’t agree with that. She also returns to face John Stamos in Kelley’s upcoming Disney + / ABC Signature series. Big beanie. Perkins is replaced by Gersh and Trademark Talent.
