Joe Biden ‘Killed the Orange Dragon’, Bill Maher Amazes and ‘Stepped Up His Game at 78’, Reveals American Ageism – Deadline

Given its indulgence towards guests like Kellyanne Conway and Megyn Kelly this season, the debut of Bill Maher’s “New Rule” show which ends tonight Real time might have worried some viewers.

“Three months after starting his presidency, it’s time to admit that Joe Biden was a huge disappointment,” Maher said bluntly. After a while, he finished the sentence – “to the comedians!”

The “comedy gold” expected from a capricious and goof-prone Biden who “shows up at work in his pajama bottoms” did not materialize, the host argued. Instead, “a funny thing happened on the way to the nursing home.” Rather, Biden was “focused and sharp,” getting a 59% approval rating and “getting things done” on racial injustice, income inequality, climate change and the war in Afghanistan.

Maher’s take for Biden was his way to a much larger point: The idea that the president ‘stepped up his game’ at 78, defying skeptics, shows just how pervasive the problem of ageism is in states -United.

“Improve at 78,” Maher said. “What a mind-boggling concept that must be for the younger generation, for whom striking someone off just because of their age is the last acceptable prejudice.” Maher, who turned 65 in January, delivered the line without a smile, like most of the seven-minute and longer segments (watch it above). Age also factored in the opening guest segment with Fran Lebowitz, who Maher says will be “the biggest star on campus” now that she is 70.

“They hate any ‘ism’ except ageism,” he continued. “It is totally forbidden to tell jokes about race, religion, gender, weight, but age? Have it.

The assumption that Biden would be incompetent at his age, Maher argued, stems from the United States’ long-held belief that this is a “young country.” Instead, he said, the United States should emulate Greece or Japan or other places where the wisdom of the ancients is sought and celebrated. “You are not so young anymore, America. It’s time for you to grow up.

Biden is “the ideal man at the moment because he is old, ”Maher said. “I went there, I did that: it’s a virtue.”

Polls leading up to the 2020 election, Maher noted, showed 37% of Americans were unwilling to vote for a candidate over 70. their accumulated knowledge? Maher asked.

In addition to seeing candidates through the lens of age, young voters also opt for extreme views, Maher said. He cited polls showing more than 30% of them say they support abolishing the police or moving from capitalism to communism.

When people tell him he doesn’t have Millennials or Gen Z because he’s too old, Maher says his response is, “The problem isn’t that I don’t understand what you say, or I’m too old. The problem is, your ideas are stupid. If you say, “Let’s go eat in the bathroom and shit in the kitchen,” yes, that’s a new idea. But I wouldn’t call it interior design.
