What is the subtext in Top gun?
The subtitle in the film has been talked about since the film was released Top gun. I mean, even a month before the movie’s release, Pauline Kael’s review came in the New Yorker and said: “The film is a brilliant homoerotic commercial: the pilots strut through the locker room, towels hanging unsteadily from their waists. It’s like masculinity has been redefined, like a young man looks half-dressed, and like narcissism is what a warrior is all about. “
There was also the 1994 film sleep with me, in which Quentin Tarantino actually played a small role speaking about the film’s repressed gay themes.
If you haven’t seen the video, you’ll see Tarantino’s character say, “You have Maverick, all right? He’s on the edge, man. He’s just right, okay? And you have Iceman and all of his crew. You’re gay, you represent the gay man, okay? And they say go, go the gay way, go the gay way. It could go either way … Kelly McGillis, she’s heterosexual. She says: No, no, no, no, no, no, go the “normal” way, stick to the rules, go the “normal” way. They say no go the gay way, be the gay way, go the gay way, okay? That’s what happens throughout the film. ”
This fun monologue expands on what people have been saying since the film came out. How Top gun Producer Jerry Bruckheimer celebrates his 35th anniversary and finally talks about this subtext.
In a recent sitdown with vultureBruckheimer said, “When you make a film, people can interpret it how they want and see something in it that the filmmakers had no idea they were typing. So we are surprised every time we hear that the films we are making are being talked about or written about that have no real context for the filmmakers or what the filmmakers wanted to do. And yet they have relevance because people believe it. ”
He ended with: “[Director] Tony [Scott] and Quentin were very good friends. In fact, Quentin came in and helped Tony and me on Crimson Tide. He came in and wrote a few scenes for us. So there was great camaraderie and respect between Quentin and Tony. Coming from Quentin is always a compliment. ”
I think this is a really good way to look at someone else’s comments on your work as a whole.
