It looks like we’re not getting a fourth ‘Before’ movie

Does love even exist if we don’t get updates about Celeste and Jesse?

I’m sure everyone has their own personal entry for the most romantic movies of all time, but my entire category is made up of the movies In front Trilogy. These films are the brainchild of Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke, and Richard Linklater. They follow a couple named Celeste and Jesse from the time they meet on a train until they are married.

We usually get one of these films every nine years, which would get us into the next episode because Before midnight came out in 2013. But Delpy said in an interview with Telerama that she refused a fourth In front Movie.

Your reasons are valid. She struggles with the withdrawal from the movie industry and is kind of tired of the way Hollywood works.

“I think about it a lot,” said Delpy. “A year and a half ago, I wasn’t far from it. The hell I went through to produce my film [My Zoe] had exhausted me. I said no to Richard Linklater for part four In front Movies. I thought maybe I could go back to school. For example, I would be a very good doctor. You give me three symptoms and I’ll tell you what you’re suffering from … But I like to create, tell stories; it is stronger than me. ”

Much of this frustration can be attributed to how difficult it was to give their ideas the green light.

I have a wonderful script A dazzling spectacle of splendor, about the pioneers of Hollywood. One of the best I’ve written. A talented and well-known English actress, Emilia Clarke, is associated with the project. And yet I still fight. Non-stop. I have so many films in my drawers that are never made. If you only knew! I’m sick.”

This kind of burnout breaks my heart. Delpy isn’t the first person to lament Hollywood’s lack of foresight or the horrors of the development process, but she’s established enough to hopefully find a way out. Maybe with a streamer.

It’s not just Delpy. Hawke said IndieWire that if a quarter In front Film happened would change what we know about these films and their timeline.

“If the first three were every nine years apart, the fourth wouldn’t follow that path,” said Hawke. “Linklater would want a different route, either a short film set four years later midnight or a feature two decades in the future. We think about it. These are the three best experiences of my life: Before sunrise, before sunset and Before midnight. You are part of me. At the idea of reconsidering it, I would have to believe that we could do something so good. ”

Hawke continued, “These films worked because all three of us were making the exact same film every time. When people do sequels just to be together … like Burt Reynolds just did sequels to party with these friends. You could make a million Cannonball Movies. You could tell they had a great time. I don’t know if it was the audience. We like to work together and like to be together, but we have to make sure we have something to say. ”

We have no idea if and when we will get a fourth In front Film, but I like to imagine that they are secretly filming it and one day surprise us with it. Even if not, I’m happy with what these artists have already given us, and I hope, for their sake, that we’ll be creating some new, interesting, and challenging projects in the years to come.
