Interview with the creators of “ The Amazing Race ” Bertram Van Munster and Elise Doganieri – Deadline

Fantastic race has been on the air for 20 years, and this year the CBS reality adventure competition series hit a milestone: 1 million miles traveled.

The show’s 32nd season, which premiered in October 2020, featured stages across the Amazon and across Kazakhstan, as well as its first-ever “mega-stage,” which saw contestants face off against two detours and two roadblocks in India.

Co-creator Elise Doganieri, speaking at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted Awards-season, said it was like a “military operation.” “It was new and exciting and it really pushed the boundaries not only for the competitors but also for the production,” she added.

Doganieri co-creator Bertram Van Munster added that these kinds of twists help him feel ‘fresh’ and ‘energized’. “Elise and I kept a very strong hand on the creativity and logistics of this show and it worked for us,” he said.

Host Phil Keoghan said this season, which includes 11 episodes shot in 21 days, said this season is the most physically demanding to film since season three. But van Munster said he never found it exhausting but rather “an obsession and addiction.”

The show has come a long way since 2001, where they had to use walkie-talkies and satellite phones because cell coverage was not universal. “We’ll have to wait for the cloud cover to clear before we can call the next location,” Doganieri said.

“We never imagined we would stay this long. We are shocked and happy. Our backdrop and our studio are the world and the world has changed since we started in 2001 – if we go back to the same place it really doesn’t look the same, ”she added.

Then the duo try to figure out how to get the show, which over the years has received more than 80 Emmy nominations and 10 wins for a series of Outstanding Reality Contests, back in production for its 33rd season, if the pandemic is hit. permits.

“Everyone is getting the vaccine right now, so as soon as there is global immunity we are going in the right direction, we have to wait until it is safe to go back there,” Doganieri said. “Then we’ll go there.”
