Interview with Jurnee Smollett, Jonathan Majors and Misha Green – Deadline

HBO’s new hit series Lovecraft Country is inspired by Matt Ruff’s fantasy horror novel which explores racism in American culture through the content of HP Lovecraft’s horror books. “I just think it’s so interesting what Matt was doing in the book, which was reclaiming gender spaces for people who were generally left out,” show creator and executive producer Misha Green said during Deadline’s Contenders Television Awards Season Event.

“Because that’s when horror works best when it’s a metaphor for something else,” Green added. “The ghost is therefore a metaphor for the things that haunt you. And being black in America is like being in a horror story, so it fits perfectly.

Contenders Television: live stream, schedule, lineup

Starring Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Majors, who joined Green on the virtual Contenders panel, the period drama series follows Atticus Freeman (Majors) as he sets out with his friend Letitia (Smollett) and uncle George (Courtney). B. Vance) on a road trip through Jim Crow’s America in search of Freeman’s missing father (played by Michael Kenneth Williams). The mission turns into a fight for survival amid both the racist horror of white America and the monstrous creatures of sci-fi history.

“You create a piece of art and you hope it speaks to the time it is coming out now,” Green said, speaking of the show’s relevance.

“I think the thing about Lovecraft Country, what we talked about a lot when we were developing it is that it’s timeless, ”she said. “It can make American history anytime because we’ve been playing the same American history since 1619. So I feel happy that there is more awareness about it. There are more conversations going on. And I just hope that Lovecraft Country contributes to that conversation, builds on it, and makes us see things in a different light. “
