“I think something that has always been at the heart of RuPaul’s Drag Race has seen people overcome obstacles in adversity to achieve success and fame, ”said Shea. “I think there is no greater obstacle to overcome than a global pandemic unlike what we have seen over the last century, and being able to walk into people’s living rooms every week has allowed us to connect with people on such a deep level … especially for the black queens during the BLM movement this year, because it mobilized so much more.

After being crowned the winner of Season 12, Jaida said her fan base has grown and social media is very important to the use of her platform.

“I have always spoken in my community about what is important to me and being a black melan queen, but be sure Drag race and having this new audience seeing me… my voice is amplified. Thanks to this, I am able to reach more people to understand who I am and where I am from. “

Freshly crowned Season 13 winner Symone became an immediate favorite with her looks that represented the epitome of black excellence and culture. From a stunning drag look to a stunning dress that bolstered the Black Lives Matter movement, Symone maximized her voice on the series.

“My flirting in general and how I choose to express myself was my way of speaking and communicating. We filmed a bit after the George Floyd incident so I knew that coming in I had a really unique perspective and opportunity to really say what I wanted to say, whether through my fashion or on the show. with what I said, ”she said. . “I had fun with it, but I also took it seriously. I knew what I wanted to do and what I wanted to say, and I did it in a way that I felt could be transmitted.

The Sims have been teaching queens dance routines for many seasons Drag race. Most recently, he choreographed the numbers for the memorable “Madonna Rusical” from season 12 as well as the “Lucky” routine from season 13. For the latter, he had to teach choreography with Covid settings on set – and he still managed to kill.

“I love this show so much,” he said on the VH1 panel. “It brought me so much joy – it’s what I feel every time I walk on a set to work with everyone.”

When teaching choreography on the show, Sims have a full plate. Sometimes he has two hours to teach a 12 queen routine. He only has 10 minutes with each to learn their part of their dance and after that he only sees them the next morning. It’s not a lot of time, but it manages to make it work.

“I want you all to win!” Sims admitted. “I’m a fan! I’m not here to challenge you to be something you’re not. I want to shine the light on you.”
