Saina came out this weekend and became one of those movies that also had the potential to find some sort of audience. No, it wouldn’t have been a Mary Kom to end up in a 60 crore range. However, it would have gone well on Soorma’s path at least to be close to the 30 crore mark, if it had been released at regular times.
This will not be the case for the film directed by Amol Gupte, as it will not even make 5% of its potential business and would fall back below the 1.50 crore mark. It’s quite disheartening for the sports drama which comes across as a biopic of Saina Nehwal, a known youth icon and also a reasonably popular face among children.
Saina might not be the most exhilarating affair that keeps you on the edge of the seat, but at the very least, she manages to reasonably engage you as she plays for nearly two hours.
However, the current situation meant that Saina’s opening weekend remained well below the 1 crore * mark and therefore consecutive trade disappointments for Parineeti Chopra after Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar. The silver lining for the actress is that she was appreciated and would accept that as she is in the present day, although at least critical praise kicks in, that’s an added bonus as well.
