Anupam Kher ends 37 years in the film industry on Tuesday. Looking back on his journey of playing over 500 characters, the seasoned actor says he’s never been worried as an actor and feels humbled for the love he has.

The actor made his debut at the age of 28 in Mahesh Bhatt’s 1984 film “Saaransh”, laudable as a 58-year-old man.

“I was an insecure person at that point (when the journey started) because I had no accommodation, but I was never an insecure actor because I had followed a four-year training course in the best schools. I’ve made some trite and stupid movies, but I proudly own them all. I own all of my insignificant work because it was part of my journey, ”he says.

The actor was noted for his roles in films like “Karma”, “Hum Aapke Hai Koun ..!” and “Papa” among many others. He says he never takes himself seriously in his career.

“I feel humble, very happy that God has been kind to me, the film industry has been kind to me. I am the son of a clerk from the forestry department of Shimla. I think the joy of the trip was that I didn’t take myself seriously as a person. I did my job and I’m glad I chose “Saraansh” as my first film or rather I should say he chose me as an actor. I always believe that if you take risks, God will reward you in a better way. A lot of people at the time pointed out to me that I was only 28 years old. But the role was so phenomenal that if I hadn’t done Saaransh, I might not have survived that long, ”says Anupam.

Anupam Kher continues, “I think it was a mixture of having the courage to do that (‘Saaransh’) and the other thing was that I knew I had to establish myself as an actor, rather than just another hero. I was from the National School of Dramatic Art and had a theater training and could not have gotten a better role as a 58 year old man. It was a dream launch for me and I put all my misery, my humiliation and my lack of dignity, which I had for three years staying on the platforms, in this role and the result is there.

“Every year we talk about films completing so many years because it has become a friendly word for hashtags, but how many people, and I say this in all humility, can brag about a film like ‘Saaransh’ . It speaks of me not only as an actor but also of the courage that I showed by choosing this film, ”he adds.

Kher also tried his luck in Hollywood, of course, working with Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence in the multiple Oscar-nominated films “Silver Linings Playbook”, and stirred the American television world with the drama. medical “New Amsterdam”, to which he said goodbye earlier this year. Despite such an international standard, he says he still has doubts about an artist.

“As an actor, I still doubt myself today. The day I become confident as an actor, that will be the end of my growth. How can you say “I know”? Comedy has no program. That’s why you have people who perform brilliantly, even at 85 years old. This is due to a lack of guarantee. It’s not that all the films I’ve made are classics. I also liked the more mundane and silly movies because the journey is more important than the destination, ”he says.
