Awarded a Critics Choice Award for role in HBO limited series Cancellation On Sunday night Donald Sutherland said he seriously believed he was the killer for most of the shoot.
“The truth is, we didn’t know,” he said in a Zoom conversation with the press after his victory. “I always suspected it was me. And maybe was I.”
In the David E. Kelley-created Cancellation, Sutherland plays the rich father of Nicole Kidman’s character, who is grappling with her husband (Hugh Grant) charged with murder.
And Sutherland was sincere in his suspicions, because, he explained, no one in the cast knew the killer’s identity until they filmed this episode. “We did not get the 6th [finale episode] script until we shoot it. Seriously. And then when I knew, the relief that it wasn’t me was so great I didn’t want to say anything. Except that I just said something.
When asked how he kept a mindset that has brought him a constant stream of success, he laughed and said, “I can only say – it sounds awful and really pretentious – but it always has. been the search for the veracity, the veracity of the character, and the joy of discovering that, that was the great happiness of my life. The character was so beautifully written and directed. And play with Nicole. I have been her dad many times and love it and Hugh was fantastic. And I had a lot of fun doing that and I had a lot of fun saying the lines from David E. Kelley.
