Isn’t Google Chrome a fantastic web browser? Well it is a web browser that is used by 310 million people worldwide and it occupies 40% of the market. And one of the main reasons for that is Chrome’s various useful and practical features.
One of these features is the Thumbnails feature, which allows you to add the most visited websites to the main Chrome page. The question is how to add thumbnails to the Google Chrome homepage.
It would be nice if you could instantly access some of your favorite sites like Google, Facebook and YouTube, right? That is why in this article we are going to discuss the methods of adding thumbnails to your Google Chrome browser.
How do I add thumbnails to the Google Chrome homepage?
Google Chrome’s thumbnail feature has been criticized and criticized by its users in the past for lack of customization. For example, it worked automatically in the older versions of Chrome and didn’t let the user choose the websites to use for quick access.
Additionally, this feature only supported a maximum of eight thumbnails. However, this is not the case with the latest versions of Chrome. You can easily add thumbnails to the main page of your Chrome and even increase the maximum number of thumbnails you can have on the main page. We’ll get into the latter point at the end of the article.
A friendly reminder! You can only add thumbnails manually in the PC version of Chrome. This function is automatic in the app version (for smartphones and tablets) and cannot be set manually.
After all of this, let’s take a look at the different methods of adding thumbnails to the Google Chrome browser. Oh, and before you start the process, make sure you’re using the latest version of Chrome.
Adding Thumbnails to Google Chrome Home – Method 1
Open the Google Chrome browser on your PC
First, you need to open Google Chrome. You can either do this by double-clicking the Chrome icon on your desktop. Or you can navigate to the Start menu and type in chrome, then click the Chrome icon. (If you are using Mac OS you will need to use the Applications folder)
If the browser doesn’t show you a new tab, you’ll need to activate it by typing chrome: // flags in the browser’s address bar. Then, press ENTER.
Go to the search option and enter “use-google-local-NTP” and enable the enabled option. Then restart the browser.
Navigate to a new tab in Chrome
If your Chrome browser is set by default to go to a specific webpage when you start it, you’ll need to open a new tab. Click the “+” button near your current tab or click “Ctrl” + “t” (Command + “t” on the Mac) to open a new tab.
Remove the previous thumbnails
Before you can add new thumbnails / shortcuts to the start page, you must first remove the thumbnails set automatically by Chrome. To do this, you should move your mouse pointer over the shortcuts and then you will see a menu option with three dots. Click on it and then select the “Remove” option.
Remember, Chrome gives you the option to choose a maximum of 10 different thumbnails. So it is necessary to delete some old thumbnails.
Add a new link
Then click the “+ Add Shortcut” button. A dialog box opens with two input fields. The first takes the name of the thumbnail as input. And the second uses the url of the website you want to add as a link.
Enter the required information
Enter the name and address of your preferred website in the text boxes and then click the “Done” button. And your job is done. From now on, every time you open a new tab in Chrome, your thumbnail list will contain the newly added thumbnail.
Add thumbnails to the Google Chrome homepage
Hey, did you know that you can actually use the Chrome browser’s automatic thumbnailing feature to add a website that you want to use as a shortcut? Here’s how you can do that:
Just follow the directions we provided earlier to open the browser on your computer. After starting Chrome, you’ll need to switch to a new tab.
- Clear cache, cookies and browsing history
Now click “Ctrl” + “Shift” + “Del” while you have Chrome open. This will take you to the settings page, where you will see the “Clear data” button. Click on it after checking all types of previous browsing history. This will delete all traces of your browser’s cached data.
For this process to work effectively, you need to close your current instance of the browser and then reopen it. Then navigate to a new tab by clicking “Ctrl” + “t”.
Go to the browser tab address bar and paste the link to the site you want to add as a thumbnail. For example, https://facebook.com. Then press the “Enter key”.
And that’s all you have to do! Chrome automatically added the website address as a new home page thumbnail once you entered the website. Now just close the browser and start it again. You will see the site as a new thumbnail.
Going into the address bar and entering the url of the site you want to access or googling and searching the site for keywords is a bit of a hassle, isn’t it?
When you have all the sites and links you need right on the homepage, make sure that all of those sites are just a click away. This is why Chrome’s thumbnail feature is so important.
Hopefully our guide on adding thumbnails to Google Chrome homepage helped you understand the process of adding your own thumbnail / shortcut to Chrome.
