How Chris Meloni’s Elliot Stabler Returns To The ‘Law & Order’ Fold – Deadline

SPOIL ALERT: This report contains details on tonight’s Law & Order episode: SVU and Law & Order: Organized crime.

Elliot Stabler is back. Actor Christopher Meloni returned Thursday night in a crossover TV event marked by a tragedy that pushed him into prime-time viewing SVU in his own spin-off, Law and order: organized crime, first just after.

The NYPD detective he played for years, now based in Rome and battling terrorism, sex trafficking and organized crime, has reunited with longtime partner Mariska Hargitay, now Captain Benson, who is struggling to digest his sudden reappearance in New York.

The duo starred together for SVU’s first 12 seasons from 1999-2011 until Stabler abruptly retired from the force, off-camera, in the Season 13 premiere.

A clip released at the end of February teased the reunion, at a crime scene, as Stabler shouts “Liv!” and a shocked Benson quickly turns around, whispering “Elliot!”

Now we know why. Seconds after the credits open, Benson answers a call, a car bomb, and recognizes the “victim” – Stabler’s wife, Kathy. Looking up, she locks her eyes with her former partner. They haven’t had any contact for ten years. “They tried to kill Kathy,” he said. And they left.

It appears Stabler got stuck in a torn curfew protest in which police vehicles were targeted. He got out of his car to make a call. The bomb was of course intended for Elliot.

Why did he really leave New York in the first place? We do not know. Why is he back? To testify against two suspects he arrested in Puglia, he said.

Why does he keep harassing guys during interrogation – so the last decade. “Please don’t say to me anymore: ‘We don’t do it that way anymore’, I lived in Europe, not under a rock!” he yells at Olivia.

Did he even plan to call her? Does not seem to.

Kathy can’t do it. Segue to Law and order: organized crime where Stabler will seek to rebuild his life after the devastating loss as part of a new elite task force that one by one destroys the city’s most powerful criminal syndicates.

The series, shot in New York, is produced by Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
