“Gattaca”

In 1997, the public didn’t really know what to do with Andrew Niccol’s “Gattaca”. There were major stars like Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, but it felt more like an arthouse drama or even an old-fashioned noir than a blockbuster. Critics liked it mostly, and some fans found it on VHS and DVD before long, but it feels like a film that has become more timely and loved in the nearly quarter of a century since its release. This month, it’s coming out in a 4K Steelbook edition that’s a beauty (check out this cover art!), And remastered from the original negative in a way that truly enriches its intelligent and deep color palette. I forgot how beautiful this movie is, using light and shadow in a way that mixes its sci-fi and dark sensibilities in a fascinating way. I’m not sure the end is coming, but there is so much to love here, and it feels like a movie really ahead of its time.

“Godzilla”

Fans of the new Monsterverse are falling in love with the big players for the title in “Godzilla vs. Kong,” now in theaters and on HBO Max for a few more weeks. It’s actually the fourth movie in this series, which rebooted in 2014 with Gareth Edwards’ “Godzilla” still my favorite of modern movies (although I also like “Kong: Skull Island” and “GvK”; not so “King of the monsters”). There’s something about the grandeur of Edwards’ approach that hasn’t quite been matched in the more kitsch sequels, and it’s even easier to appreciate the way Edwards plays with perspective and light in this new 4K version. Hopefully “GvK” gets a 4K version as powerful as this down the line (although a few more features would have been nice).

“Monster hunter”

The latest from “Resident Evil” director Paul WS Anderson aired to surprisingly receptive audiences in December of last year, a prime example of people just in need of something amazing at the end of the year. the longest in history. I understand that. I wouldn’t agree that “Monster Hunter” does this kind of escape well, but I would never deprive that kind of fun from the people who need it, especially in 2021. And so here’s the 4K release of a movie that should definitely be viewed in the best possible HD quality. Do what you want with it.
