HBO Max brings ‘Lucy the Human Chimp’
HBO Max embarked on Keo Films’ Channel 4 documentary Lucy the human chimpanzee, which tells the story of a chimpanzee raised as a human and Janis Carter, the woman who took on the task of helping give her freedom by living with her in the wild. Directed by Alex Parkinson, the film premieres this spring and uses previously unreleased film and archival photography, along with dramatic reconstruction. The HBO Max deal was negotiated by Hat Trick International sales director Jonathan South.

Cannes Lions goes virtual
The Cannes Lions advertising festival is set to become a “fully digital” experience this year after being completely canceled last year amid the pandemic. The event, which will take place from June 21 to 25, will become Cannes Lions Live, just as other events on the French Riviera have adopted virtual alternatives. Next week, the annual MipTV gathering will take place online. Cannes Lions is due to take place just two weeks before the Cannes Film Festival, which is currently sticking to its guns at a physical event.

French Brut launches a streamer
Growing Paris-based online media group Brut threw its hat into the SVOD ring, today launching BrutX in France. The subscription streaming platform will offer films, series, documentaries, feature-length interviews, short films and animation, including original productions and international acquisitions. Priced at 4.99 euros per month, BrutX programming will focus on “the major concerns of the new generations”, including the environment, women’s rights, diversity, anti-discrimination and more. Brut was founded in 2016 by Guillaume Lacroix of Studio Bagel and former Canal Plus producer Renaud Le Van Kim. The digital media group claims it has one billion users in 60 countries (including the US, UK and Mexico) who watched 20 billion videos in 2020. Its population is predominantly 18 years old. at 34 years old. Among the notable acquisitions for France, BrutX starts with Veneno, the successful Spanish series that follows the life of 1990s transgender icon Cristina Ortiz Rodriguez and which was released in the US on HBO Max last year, as well as in the UK. Adult material, broadcast on Channel 4.

Increased entertainment hires
ITV Studios’ entertainment label Lifted Entertainment has hired a trio of development directors. Former Channel 4 Day Commissioner Ramy El-Bergamy will lead development from the north of England, while Sean O’Brien and Susannah Haley have joined the London-based team as producer and director of the development respectively. O’Brien joins Fremantle’s Talkback, where he played a role in the development of Netflix Too hot to handle. Haley has worked on shows including Channel 4 Rob Rinder’s verdict.
