Hasbro will rebrand its classic Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head toy line as simply “Potato Head,” adapting and better reflecting today’s modern families and gender identities.
The toy brand announced Thursday that while it will drop the “Mr.” of the toy’s brand and logo, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head will always stay in line. With unspecified branding, consumers can create potato families with same sex or single parents and express their own ideas about gender roles and norms.
The toy, launched by Hasbro in 1952, will sport its new gender-neutral name later this fall. Rebranding of the popular toy franchise, which has been featured in several Toy story movies, comes as other popular toy names, including American Girl Doll and Barbie, adjust their products to better represent different races, gender identities, and sexual orientations.
While many Twitter users have expressed outrage or support over the newly announced neutral name, Hasbro reassured those alarmed by the rebranding that the original spouses are not going anywhere.
“I am proud to confirm that MR. & MRS. POTATO HEAD is not going anywhere and will remain MR. & MRS. POTATO HEAD, ”the toy giant’s official Twitter account shared on Thursday.
Hold that Tot – your main spud, MR. POTATO HEAD is not going anywhere! While it was announced today that the name and logo of the brand POTATO HEAD abandon the “MR”.
