Golden Globe winner Mark Ruffalo, GLAAD Call Out HFPA – Deadline

The backlash against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association shows no signs of abating. Mark Ruffalo, who won a Golden Globe Award this year, today called the international group of journalists.

Hours after the fidgetcube broke news of Netflix’s Ted Sarandos swearing to stop doing business with HFPA until bigger changes happen, Ruffalo and GLAAD released their own statements.

Ruffalo, a three-time Oscar nominee, said he “cannot feel proud or happy to be a recipient of this [Golden Globe] award ”, which he won for his dual role in HBO I know this to be true.

“It is disheartening to see the HFPA, which has gained notoriety and has benefited greatly from its involvement with filmmakers and actors, resist the change that is being asked of it from many groups that have been most disenfranchised. by their culture of secrecy and exclusion, ”Ruffalo said in a statement to Deadline. “Now is the time to step up and right the wrongs of the past. Honestly, as a Golden Globe recipient, I cannot feel proud or happy to have been a recipient of this award.

Ted Sarandos from Netflix to HFPA: “ We are shutting down all activities in your organization until more significant changes are made ”

“Our industry is seizing the opportunity for greater equality at this great time,” he added. “It’s not perfect and long overdue, but it’s clear what needs to happen and how. The Justice Movement offers all of us, the HFPA and all other entertainment entities, a good way forward. We should all follow suit. It is our audience and our highest sense of decency that we are ultimately serving with these changes. They deserve both.

The besieged HFPA has been criticized by many sides for weeks on end for the lack of diversity in its ranks and its initial poorly received statement about it and the subsequent plan for “transformational change”.

And the backlash continues against HFPA.

Among the many individuals and groups who have torn the organization apart is Time’s Up – which again criticized it today after writing a pair of scathing post-Globes letters – Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos Ava DuVernay, Ellen Pompeo, Kerry Washington, JJ Abrams, Jurnee Smollett, Jenifer Aniston, Damon Lindelof and Shonda Rhimes, the CEO, SAG-AFTRA and GLAAD. The latter released a statement tonight from CEO Sarah Kate Ellis:

HFPA reforms do not go far enough to ensure that the organization is a place where historically marginalized communities – including the LGBTQ community – feel welcome; especially not in time for a significant change to take place before the 2022 awards season. There is a lack of transparency and accountability that has yet to be resolved.

“It is not enough for the HFPA to simply say that it is working to have a certain number of black members. It’s time for the HFPA and the Golden Globes to truly reflect all of Hollywood’s intersectional diversity. GLAAD stands with the Time’s Up Foundation, Color of Change, and all those calling for deeper and faster change, real inclusion and acceptance. “
