‘Glee’ Cast Honors Naya Rivera at GLAAD Media Awards – Deadline

On Thursday evening, actress, musician and lawyer Demi Lovato delivered a heartwarming tribute to the late great Joy actress Naya Rivera. Lovato was a friend of Santana de Rivera and also played his girlfriend in the Fox musical series.

This tribute honored the 10th anniversary of Santana’s exit as a lesbian in the GLAAD Media Award winning series. As Lovato pointed out, he was a revolutionary figure for the portrayal of Latinx LGBTQ on television. “Her ambition and accomplishments have inspired Latin women around the world,” said Lovato de Rivera. “It’s the power of a show like Joy.

The special tribute included Jacob Artist, Chris Colfer, Darren Criss, Jessalyn Gilsig, Dot Marie-Jones, Vanessa Lengies, Jane Lynch, Kevin McHale, Heather Morris, Matthew Morrison, Alex Newell, Lauren Potter, Amber Riley, Harry Shum Jr. , Becca Tobin and Jenna Ushkowitz.

“There was so much more than what I saw with Naya,” Criss said.

Lynch recalled how impressed she was with the quality of performer Rivera when she became a regular on the show. Tobin, Ushkowitz and Newell celebrated his incredible performance of “Nutbush City Limits”.

McHale said everyone said the same thing about Rivera when she treated everyone with kindness. Ushkowitz added, “She made everyone laugh on screen and off, but the real win is if you make her laugh because you knew you did something really funny.”

Morrison opened up about her grandmother, and Riley pointed out that she hosted the GLAAD Media Awards twice – once on her own and with the late Cory Monteith.

The cast shared the heartbreaking scene when Santana’s grandmother kicked her out of the house for being gay and spoke about the impact she has had on the queer and Latinx community.

Rivera’s mother, Yolanda Previtire, was unable to attend the tribute, but she shared a message: “Naya would be honored to receive this recognition. When Naya heard that Santana would be a lesbian she called me to let me know and I asked her how she felt about it and she said, ‘I feel good about this!’ “

“We didn’t know it would impact so many people in the LGBTQ community,” Previtire continued. “His desire was to always be an advocate for those who had no voice. I don’t think she realized how important she was to this world. I am grateful that my oldest daughter has helped change the landscape of the way we see ourselves and each other. Thank you GLAAD for preserving my daughter’s legacy.
