GLAAD Media Awards Winners List Includes ‘Schitt’s Creek’, ‘Disclosure’ – Deadline

GLAAD ruled Thursday night with a virtual ceremony for the 32nd GLAAD Media Awards that honors the media for their fair, accurate and inclusive portrayals of LGBTQ people and issues. The ceremony premiered on YouTube Thursday night, but if you missed it, it will be available to stream on Hulu from 10 p.m. ET tonight through the end of June.

Hosted by Niecy Nash, the ceremony was filled with appearances from people such as Ian Alexander (Star Trek: Discovery), Jonathan Bennett (Christmas house), Sterling K. Brown (It’s us), Laverne Cox (Disclosure, promising young woman), Wilson Cruz (Star Trek: Discovery), Mackenzie Davis (The happiest season), Nyle DiMarco (Deaf U), Colman Domingo (Black background of Ma Rainey, Euphoria), Clea DuVall (The happiest season), Brandee Evans (Valley P), Dan Levy (Schitt Creek), Katy Perry, JoJo Siwa and the cast of the groundbreaking and critically acclaimed HBO Max series Veneno.

Actors, actresses, directors, creators, cultural figures and everyone spoke out throughout the evening as they stood with transgender youth and called for the passage of the equality law during the ceremony. Additionally, people spoke of their support for intersectional identities, including the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as violence against the Asian and Asian American community as well as the transgender community.

The evening included performances by CHIKA, Rebecca Black and Jessica Betts. Additionally, the Hulu stream will feature an exclusive performance by Sabrina Carpenter.

Joy actors Jacob Artist, Chris Colfer, Darren Criss, Vanessa Lengies, Jane Lynch, Kevin McHale, Heather Morris, Matthew Morrison, Alex Newell, Amber Riley, Harry Shum Jr., Becca Tobin and Jenna Ushkowitz reunite for a moving performance to pay special tribute to the legacy of the late Naya Rivera’s character, Santana Lopez.

“The special guests and winners of the GLAAD Media Awards sent an undeniably strong message of acceptance of LGBTQ around the world tonight,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “This year’s winners, in particular Disclosure, Schitt’s Creek, Star Trek: Discovery, and Veneno We reiterate that even in times of political and cultural division, diverse LGBTQ representation and visibility can illuminate, entertain and create lasting impact, ultimately raising the bar for LGBTQ inclusion in media.

During the virtual ceremony, GLAAD highlighted the winners for nine competitive categories:

  • Herm Smith accepted the award for Exceptional musical artist
  • Disclosuree won the award for Exceptional documentary
  • Schitts Creek received the award for Outstanding comic series for a second consecutive year
  • Star Trek: Discovery won for Outstanding Drama Series
  • Happinesst Season won the award for Outstanding Movie – Wide Release
  • Ee Boys in the Band received the award for Outstanding Film – Limited Release
  • We’re Here won for Exceptional reality program
  • Ee Show Not-Too-Late with Elmo won the award for Exceptional children’s programming
  • “Lillresponds to comments about his sexuality, ” a segment from Lilly Singh’s late night talk show A little late with Little Singh, won for Exceptional variety or talk show episode

Prior to the virtual ceremony, GLAAD announced the winners of the other GLAAD Media Awards categories on Twitter, which included acceptance speeches from each of the award recipients, including Michaela Coel on behalf I can destroy you (Limited series or exceptional anthology), Chika (Outstanding Breakthrough Musical Artist), Robin Roberts on behalf of “Dwyane Wade One-On-One: Basketball Legend Opens Up About Supporting Transgender Girl” (Outstanding TV Journalism Segment), the creators of Veneno (Outstanding television series scripted in Spanish), Dee Ofe Watters on behalf of Monica Robert’s TransGriot (Outstanding Blog), and more.

Deadline’s new Hollywood podcast also received a special honor and hosts Dino-Ray Ramos and Amanda N’Duka graciously accepted the award.

This year GLAAD worked with TikTok on a special recognition titled “TikTok Queer Advocate of the Year”, a fan-voted honor spotlighting the creators of TikTok who took LGBTQ visibility to new heights. At the ceremony, JoJo Siwa presented the award to the creator of TikTok Josh Helfgott.
