FRIENDS has been a show dear to its fan base and as we get closer to its reunion we have started delving into the extremely rare anecdotes about the series. In an old interview with show creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman, we got to understand how they planned the iconic finale of an iconic show.
Interestingly, discussions about the end of the series had been ongoing since Season 7, but it was the love of the fans that forced the creators to return each year for three more seasons. They also brought up the idea of leaving an open end for spin-offs or more seasons.
Deciding that Season 10 would be a finale, Marta Kauffman, in conversation with Entertainment Weekly, said, “Maybe it was a little different from the other shows, only because we had several years where we thought that it would be the last year. . “
David Crane added, “Due to the actors ‘contract negotiations, and it looked like,’ Oh, season 7 is the final season. “Or season 8. Or season 9. So in each of those seasons we had an eye on,“ Okay, if this is the last year, what are we doing? ”And then, surprisingly, he arose out of the ashes, at the last minute, “Oh my god, there’s still a season …” To which Kauffman said, “At that point, we said,” This is it. last. season. ‘”
David Crane also said, “We can’t just keep stopping, starting over and rethinking everything. And that was also what some of the cast were thinking. The only thing we absolutely knew early on was that we had to reunite Ross and Rachel. We had stung audiences for ten years with their “will or not”, and we saw no benefit in frustrating them.
In the same interview, Marta Kauffman explained if they intend to leave a room at the end for the spin-offs. She said, “Never. We never, from the start, ever wanted to do a spin-off or adult friends or friends, kids or baby friends. We always knew and felt very strongly that not only would it never happen, but we never wanted to be a part of it because it works so rarely. We just felt like this show was about a certain time in your life, and once you get past that time in your life, the show is over. “
David Crane added to the same, “Plus, it was enough work putting the right bow on that not to worry, ‘Well, what are they going to do after that?’ It is done. If anyone wants … and they did, of course: Scott [Silveri] and Shana [Goldberg-Meehan] and Matt [LeBlanc] and Kevin went to do Joey, but at no point did anyone ask us to lay the groundwork for it or prepare for it.
