‘Family Matters’ did not welcome Jaleel White to the cast, he claims – Deadline

The cast of the sitcom of the 80s and 90s Family matters didn’t really make Jaleel White feel right at home when he joined.

Speaking in an episode of TV One’s Uncensored which airs Sunday at 10 p.m. ET, White remembers the cold shoulder he felt.

“I wasn’t welcomed into the cast at all,” he said. “They know what it was … I didn’t think it was for sure Family matters, because it was supposed to be a guest spot, one and done.

Of course, White’s character Steve Urkel has proven to be more than a one-off appearance, becoming one of the most iconic sitcom characters of all time.

White also recalled his late co-star Michelle Thomas, who died in 1998 of stomach cancer at the age of 30. She played his girlfriend on the show.

“Michelle Thomas has become a very special person… I literally can’t say her name or I’ll cry,” he said.
