Nushrratt Bharuccha has been in the industry for over a decade now. While she entered the Hindi film industry with the film Love Sex Aur Dhokha, it was the 2011 movie Pyaar Ka Punchnama who put it on the radar. In the recent past, she has further proven her courage as an actor with her performances in films like Dream girl, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Chhalaang and the recent Netflix anthology Ajeeb Daastaans. She received rave reviews for her performance as a domestic helper in the film titled Khilauna. After the release of the fim, Nushrratt Bharuccha spoke with Bollywood Hungama about her process and how she carved out a niche for herself despite having no formal acting training or having no connection to filmmaking.
One common trait that was noticed across all of Nushrratt’s characters is the striking self-confidence. When asked if it’s by design or by coincidence, she said, “I don’t know if it’s by design. No one ever told me whether to play with confidence or not. Two people you told me about. But it’s not by design. If there is a character and they say she has to be very confident and sweet and shy, then maybe I’ll approach her and do it like that.
“But as for Meenal (his character in Ajeeb Daastaans), his fighting spirit was against all odds and it was in the writing itself. She wouldn’t have been able to say and do what she did if she didn’t trust herself. So I think it’s by default and not by design, ”she added.
For Ajeeb Daastaans, Nushrratt watched his house help play his character Meenal. When asked if she prefers the method over approaching a character, Nushrratt said, “I don’t know what exactly the method is. I haven’t taken any acting lessons or read a book about it. I feel that each artist has their own way of expressing and being an artist. I can speak for myself. When I get a script, I reread it over and over and try to hurt myself to figure out who this lady is. I ask questions like “Why does she say the things she says ?, Where is she from?” I give the character a reality. I don’t look at her as a fictional character. I search for the roots of the character’s reality. I wonder where I can find such a person if it is written to reflect a real person. There is a difference; in Pyaar Ka Punchnama, there was a suspension of disbelief. These characters were made a bit of a caricature, but I have to keep them real because these are comedy movies. In comedy, you have to be a bit older for this effect to manifest itself. My approach to virtually any character is to do it right by making that character real. “
“For Chhorii , I found on my own a whole new way of being Chhorii what I will tell you later. But even my manager was like you’re sure you want to take this approach and I’m like, ‘Sir, this is a thought that occurred to me. Maybe I will fail, maybe I will succeed. I don’t know, let’s try. So he trusted me and I tried a whole new approach Chhorii , for me to understand this role and this film. But I don’t think there’s really an actor who has done that, not to my knowledge, which I’ll tell you when I do promotions for it. But I find different ways to do it and that’s what motivates me. It’s the most empowering and exciting part of me as an actor, ”she said. Chhorii is an upcoming horror film directed by Vishal Furia.
Speaking more about what she looks for before signing a movie, Nushrratt said, “There are 2-3 things that work for me that I’m making a movie for. One – How excited the directors of the film are to work with me! I need to be really excited to work with the director like they are for me. Likewise for the whole team, I feel that we must all be able to have fun doing the project. Two – When a movie comes to me, I listen to it like an audience. I would make a movie if I liked to watch it in a theater. Then I don’t think about things like my role, whether I’m going to be typed, or how I’m going to look at it. I never could think of it. I remember people asking me if you would do a Pyaar Ka Punchnama 3. Of course, why shouldn’t I? This is my movie. This is my space. Why should I leave this space. Just because I’m afraid of being typed? No. I think I’m confident enough as an actor that I know I can do something else when people give it to me. I will do it. They will know that I am not afraid of being categorized. I like to play these roles. I really do and will continue to do them.
