Disney + has confirmed that it is working on an original series with David Beckham, titled Save our team.
The project was first announced last month and the streamer has now announced that the football icon will be at the forefront of the show, which will be produced by Twenty Twenty and Beckham’s Studio 99, supported by Warner Bros.
Billed as a heartwarming series, the show will feature Beckham returning to the football fields in East London where he played as a child. He will be the mentor of a young grassroots team, struggling to survive in the league.
Announced on the day Beckham is scheduled to attend an opening session at MipTV, the former Manchester United and LA Galaxy star said that “the opportunity to give back to these communities as a mentor is incredible.”
Sean Doyle, Disney + director of unscripted EMEA, added, “The series will be thrilling, dramatic, uplifting, and full of heart and courage – all that David had back when he was playing.” Doyle will also be executive producer. Save our team.
The original, a first project outside the UK, is one of 50 productions Disney + aims to kick off in Europe by 2024. The streamer unveiled its first European slate in February, with eye-catching projects announced, including the Star Mafia drama. Good mothers, which puts mafia women in the frame.
