Actress Maya Rudolph, who stars in the voice cast for the upcoming animated film “Luca,” says a real-life motherhood experience helped bring her role to life.
Rudolph voices Daniela, the mother of the titular Luca in the film. She says she used a maxim that she follows with her own children to understand and bring to life the nuances of her role.
“I definitely saw my mom bear go out when needed with my kids, so that was a pretty easy part of Daniela to relate to. When your kids push the boundaries, you want to show them that you love them but are serious. It can be an incredibly difficult balance, but one that every parent understands. Daniela has a very sweet and recurring mantra with Luca, saying, “You know I love you, don’t you?” I think it’s really important for her character because she’s not shy about showing how strong she is, and she’s not shy about showing how much she loves her son, “says Rudolph.
Director Enrico Casarosa says childhood memories inspired him to make the new animated film “Luca”, which is set to be released digitally on June 18.
“This film is about friendships that change us. It’s a love letter to the summers of our youth – those formative years you find yourself in. I was lucky enough to grow up in Genoa, a port city on the Italian Riviera. It is a very particular coast because it is very steep. Mountains rise from the ocean. Cities are frozen in time, they are so picturesque. I have always imagined them as little monsters emerging from the water, ”explains Casarosa.
“Luca” is a coming-of-age story about a young boy who experiences an unforgettable summer filled with ice cream, pasta, endless scooter rides and heartwarming friendships. Luca shares these adventures with his new best friend Alberto, but all the fun is threatened by a deep secret that can sabotage their friendship.
The film features the voices of Jacob Tremblay, Jack Dylan Grazer, Maya Rudolph and Jim Gaffigan, among others.
