Daniel Kaluuya’s monologue compares the British to the British. American Racism – Deadline

Daniel Kaluuya made his Saturday Night Live hosting her debut tonight, and her funny monologue touched on a serious topic, mocked a Golden Globes glitch, and served as a thank you to a longtime member of NBC’s late night cast.

The London-born actor started off by saying, “First of all, I know you hear my accent and you’re like, ‘Oh no, he’s not black – he’s British.’ After claiming he was indeed both, he said, “Basically I’m what the royals feared the baby would look like.”

Kaluuya spoke about the topic, saying people asked him what was worse: British racism or American racism. “Let me put it that way,” he said. “British racism is so bad, the whites are gone. They wanted to be free – free to create their own clean kind of racism. That’s why they created Australia, South Africa and Boston.

He then spoke about his Oscar nominated supporting role as Fred Hampton, president of the Illinois branch of the Black Panther Party at Judas and the black Messiah, and a clip was played of his Zoomed acceptance speech.

“I was dumb – can you believe that? I told the best joke of my life, and I was muted. I felt like I was in a sunken place, ”a reference to her other Oscar nominated role in 2017 Get out.

Having gone semi-serious, Kaluuya said he was grateful to host and verify the name of a certain Nickelodeon series from the 1990s.

“When I was 9,” he says, “I wrote a play that was performed at the Hampshire Theater with real actors and everything. This is a true story – this play was based on Kenan and Kel. And this piece led me on a path that brought me to this point tonight with Kenan [Thompson] behind the scenes right now. And I just want to take this moment in front of Kenan and the whole world to say: Thank you, mom. Thank God. And thank you Kel.

Oh, there it is.
