Country Music Drama ‘Monarch’ Commissioned From Fox Series – Deadline

Fox is increasingly in the country music scene. The network has placed a serial order at Monarch, formerly known as the Untitled Country Music Dynasty Drama, by Melissa London Hilfers.

Hilfers created the series, which I believe receives an order for 12 episodes, and will write and run the production, while Instinct creator and royal pains Executive producer Michael Rauch will act as showrunner and executive producer. Gail Berman and Hend Baghdady also produce alongside Sandbox Entertainment Jason Owen, a country music leader who represents Faith Hill, Little Big Town and Kacey Musgraves. Some of Owen’s clients and friends are expected to appear and perform on the show.

The hour-long project grew out of the Network’s serial script model, the same one that spawned Karin Gist and Lee Daniels’ Our kind of people. This is the first live-action scripted series entirely owned by Fox since the sale of 20th Television to Disney and represents an evolution for the independent network.

It also marks the second production order of the day after the takeover of the network The cleaning lady this morning.

Monarch is described as a multigenerational Texas-sized musical drama about America’s first country music family. The Romans are fiercely talented, but while their name is synonymous with honesty, the very foundation of their success is a lie. When their reign as the country’s royalty is in jeopardy, Nicky Roman, the heir to the crown, already grappling with an industry stacked against her, will stop at nothing to protect her family’s legacy.

The network bought the project with a penalty in September 2019, and last August it opened a writers’ room for the show in preparation for this direct order to the series. This comes as the network moves away from the traditional pilot cycle to move towards year-round development.

Monarch was originally developed for Fox by the network’s SideCar content accelerator, run by Gail Berman (left), which closed in June 2020, with its development slate built into Fox’s scripted programming department. Berman and former SideCar executive Hend Baghdady remain executive producers of the show through the Berman’s Jackal Group banner.

Fox has 100% owned projects on the animation side, including a Dan Harmon-created series set in mythical ancient Greece, and owns much of its unscripted projects after the launch of Fox Alternative Entertainment. It now does the same on the script side.

“Music programming is a big part of the DNA of Fox’s success with shows like The Masked Singer, Empire, American Idol and JoyFox Entertainment president Michael Thorn told Deadline last year. “We looked for new ways to tell stories with music; what’s the next chapter for us in terms of juicy drama that incorporates music into storytelling. “

Hilfers is replaced by UTA, Alan Gasmer and lawyer Allison Binder of Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher LLP.
