EXCLUSIVE: Scandal alum Cornelius Smith Jr. was hired as leader against Vera Farmiga and Adepero Oduye in Five days at the memorial, Apple TV + limited series from John Ridley, Carlton Cuse and ABC Signature.
Written by Ridley and Cuse based on the acclaimed non-fiction book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Sheri Fink Five days at the memorial recounts the first five days in a New Orleans hospital after Hurricane Katrina made landfall. When the floodwaters rose, the electricity failed and the heat soared, exhausted caregivers were forced to make life and death decisions that haunted them for years.
Smith Jr. will play Dr. Bryant King, an internist and one of the few doctors of color at the hospital, which is very much in the midst of the crisis. Farmiga plays the lead role, Dr Anna Pou, the doctor on call at Memorial when the storm hit. Oduye plays Karen Wynn, nurse in charge of the hospital’s intensive care unit and head of its ethics committee.

Five days at the memorial is written and produced by Ridley and Cuse, and both will serve as directors on the limited series. ABC Signature is the studio. Author Fink will serve as the producer.
Smith Jr. is probably best known for his regular role on the series as Marcus Walker on ABC’s. Scandal. He recently had recurring roles on God made me friendship, Self Made: Inspired by the life of Madame CJ Walker and Manhunt. He is replaced by Hansen Jacobson Teller.
