Christopher Nolan and Steve McQueen call for movie support – Deadline

More than 40 key figures in the film industry have written to British Chancellor Rishi Sunak to demand more support for British cinema, which they say is “on the brink of an abyss” due to the pandemic.

Industry leaders including Christopher Nolan, Steve McQueen, Ridley Scott, Jude Law and Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are calling for “targeted financial support so that future generations can benefit from the magic of cinema ”.

“We recognize the support the government has already been able to provide,” the group says. “But we fear that this is not enough, the challenges being the most acute for the big cinema operators who have not been able to access tailor-made financing.

“These companies represent over 80% of the market, constituting in many ways its ‘critical mass’ and contributing to the success of associated sectors such as film distribution and production fusion. Without them, the future of the UK film industry as a whole would be extremely precarious. “

The letter continues: “We very much hope that the government will respond to this call. British cinema is on the brink of an abyss. We urgently need targeted financial support so that future generations can enjoy the magic of cinema. “

The UK box office, like much of the global box office, has been decimated by the Covid-19 shutdowns. The local market saw a 76% drop in revenue to $ 454 million last year and most plexes and single movie theaters remain closed with dozens of tents on ice.

The UK government has injected additional support for cinema, but as industry figures note, this funding has been targeted at single screen and / or independent theaters.
