Chris Rock was almost in ‘The Sopranos’

It’s hard to imagine The sopranos to be a better show.

No star burned brighter than Chris Rock in the late 90s. He made massive HBO specials, starred in films, and cemented himself as one of the greatest comedians of all time. Rock recently sat on a panel for The Hollywood Reporter. In it, he talked about his career and some of the different twists and turns he took.

This included a time when he actually turned down multiple offers to appear on The sopranos.

Rock said, “Sometimes you can respect something so much that you don’t even want to be a part of it. When I had my own show on HBO years ago, it was at the height of The sopranos, and I have a few offers to be a part of The sopranosand I thought, ‘I like it too much, I don’t want to spoil it.’ ”

This is a pity. Rock would have been an interesting face on the show, although he might have been so famous that it would have taken us out of the world. Difficult to say in retrospect. Rock didn’t reveal what role he was offered. Chances are they were specific to him and these characters never came out, but we’d have to ask David Chase.

Rock eventually joined the Mafia family with his stay in season four Fargo.

Rock explained, “I thought [Noah Hawley] wanted me to do his wife’s charity event or something. [Fargo] is a big job … I was such a fan [of Fargo]’I went to the meeting anyway, and then he made me this offer and I said,’ Whatever you have to do with me, I’m downstairs. ‘ Because I saw how he treated Bokeem Woodbine. ”

Bokeem Woodbine played Mike Milligan in the second season of Fargoand seeing this performance calmed Rock.

He said, “Sometimes people do amazing jobs and then when they deal with black people it’s awful. But with [Hawley], I saw him handling Bokeem and thought, ‘I can be completely in your hands. As soon as you see this, you say, ‘OK, this guy [Hawley] has no problem putting himself in this character’s shoes. ‘ I am writing, right? So when giving a studio a script, you often notice that everyone is giving you notes about the character they identify with most notes on a leash when they’re black. Or if the main girl is black, there are no notes from the white women. Because they couldn’t go inside. But Noah had no problem being Bokeem, and that’s why it’s so well written. ”

Rock brings a lot of valid points here. So much in writing is empathy, and unless you are willing to do the work to understand another culture or person, you will never be able to write it. So get out there, study the people, and do your footwork.
