Carey Mulligan dedicates her Spirit award to Helen McCrory – Deadline

On Thursday night, Carey Mulligan won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Actress for her performance “Promising Young Woman”. But her acceptance speech on the virtual show ended on a poignant and heartfelt note, as she dedicated her award to the recently deceased actress Helen McCrory.

Mulligan said: “Helen McCrory was a truly independent spirit and an actress whom I admired and will continue to admire for the rest of my career, Helen McCrory, so thank you to her for everything she has given us.

McCrory and Mulligan both hit the stage in London theaters, and both found screen fame as well. McCrory, who starred in Peaky Blinders, Its dark materials and the Harry Potter and James Bond film franchises, died on April 16, at the age of 52. McCrory’s husband, Billion Actor Damian Lewis, wrote on Twitter that she passed away peacefully at home after a “heroic battle” with cancer.

“ Promising Young Woman ” follows Cassie (Mulligan), a grieving dropout who seeks to expose sexual predators. It won an Independent Spirit Award Thursday night not only for Mulligan, but also for Best Screenplay for first-time writer, director and producer Emerald Fennell.

“I am shocked, amazed and honored to be a part of this group of amazing women,” said Mulligan, accepting the award via video. “First and foremost I must thank Emerald Fennell for his absolute genius in writing, directing and producing.”

Mulligan also thanked the crew for surviving the 23-day shoot. “They were painstakingly thought out and attentive and beautifully responsive to every scene. I’m so grateful to them, our cast, Margot Robbie, LuckyChap, Film Nation and Focus Features.
