Broadcast, Cable, New Fronts and Podcast Schedules – Deadline

For a second year in a row, May TV Upfront and Digital NewFronts presentations go virtual as the United States continues to grapple with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Again, there are no parties and other festivities that usually accompany lavish in-person presentations. And the traditional initial week events continue to grow, with the old NBC, CBS, ABC and TNT / TBS events now showcasing all of the ad-supported businesses of NBCUniversal, ViacomCBS, Disney and WarnerMedia, respectively, including streamers.

In addition to WarnerMedia, Discovery is the other unreleased presenter during Upfront Week; In 2019, the company took over the Tuesday morning slot released by ESPN, whose traditional breakfast presentation was incorporated into the ABCs later in the day. Over the past few years, Discovery had positioned its pitch with ad buyers ahead of the mid-May broadcast blitz.

The biggest change to the Upfront Week schedule this year is the CW’s decision to ignore it and hold a press conference the following week. Due to the fireworks expected by the big congloms presenting the week of May 17, the move was probably designed to avoid the initial fatigue when passing the last Thursday of this week. When it comes to presentations to advertisers, The CW has done so in private meetings and will continue to do so as its fall 2021 schedule takes shape.

On the cable side, the drop in volume over the past few years is striking. One of the reasons is NewFronts, which have grown in importance as dozens of digital and streaming outlets rally for attention and ad dollars move away from the shelf. There have also been business combinations; While it made sense for a number of big brands under one roof to do their own legwork, efficiency now reigns.

This year, NewFronts will feature new presenters, including Amazon (of which IMDb TV is a rising ad-supported streamer), Roku, and TikTok. Mainstays like YouTube and Condé Nast Entertainment are back, but Hulu, NewFronts’ longtime anchor, has scampered off to be part of Disney’s original schedule.
