British government lets streamers divulge their valuable data

Viewing data is precious to streamers and now we’re getting into the numbers.

This week the UK government decided that streamers like Amazon and Netflix must disclose streaming data for shows that run on British public service broadcasters. That would BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and channel 5.

The reason for this sudden change is that the The UK Parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee (DCMSC) wants these streamers to help track PSB’s reach.

So where do you put the data?

DCMSC believes it needs to be disclosed to both broadcasters and a media regulator called Ofcom.

The UK Government said: “We agree with the committee that there is a reason to require streaming services to share top view data with Ofcom to help them analyze and evaluate the PSB system. ”

They also added the hope that this would be “primarily on a voluntary basis” which, in essence, is that they do not have to complain about it. If these places meet the requirements, we get the data behind them Peaky blinders, Fleabag, and many other popular shows.

Of course, Netflix, Amazon, and Apple argued that it would be bad for their business to disclose such information, but the DCMSC disagreed. saying, “We do not believe that sharing top viewer data on PSB-based content with Ofcom and the relevant PSB is the [sic] would be commercially sensitive. Streaming services are an important “second window” to PSB content, but without viewer data it is difficult to fully assess the reach of PSBs. ”

They also require streamers to run the show’s icons before or after, but most of the time these streamers are already doing so. So when you see something like that The end of the damn world, the Channel 4 logo should appear.

What does it mean to move forward?

If the UK can get streamers to show their data, other countries are around the corner. From now on, streamers will keep the data close to their breasts. But knowing that shows are more popular could mean streamers have to pay more for those shows. However, if the programs on the streamer do not come from another network, then streamers seem to keep this data secret.

We will watch this as the situation changes.
