Secretary of State Antony Blinken danced around the idea of a boycott of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in China on NBC on Sunday Meet the press, qualify such a discourse as “premature”.
The next Winter Olympics are scheduled for February 2022 in Beijing. Earlier this week, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry warned of an unspecified “robust Chinese response” to a possible boycott of the Olympics, which some reports indicate has been discussed by the States- United and their allies.
Meet the press Anchor Chuck Todd asked Blinken how the United States can justify doing business with China, “or any country that you think is committing genocide?”
Blinken said products made in areas where the Uyghur population is persecuted should not reach the US market, but added, “We have to be able to deal with China.”
Todd then asked, “Some people think an appropriate punishment is not to compete in the 2022 Winter Olympics. Is that on the table among Western allies, or not? “
Blinken said: “We are not there yet. It’s about a year before the Olympics. We are not focused on a boycott. What we focus on is talking, consulting closely with our allies and partners, listening to them, listening to concerns. But it is premature.
