As Hollywood prepared for the Oscar showdown at Union Station, the specialty box office saw a new release sweep the floors on its theatrical debut.
This week Bleecker Street released the comedy Together together, with Ed Helms and the Patti Harrison comic. The photo follows lonely young Anna (Harrison) who is hired as a substitute for Matt (Helms), a single man in his forties. The two strangers realize that this unexpected relationship will quickly challenge their perceptions of connection, boundaries, and peculiarities of love.
Together together racked up $ 522,440 during its opening weekend. With 665 runs in 136 markets, the helm film Nikole Beckwith had decent performances in the Los Angeles and New York markets, selling several shows in the evening.
The specialty box office saw two more new releases, although much smaller than Together.
Screen Media Films’ Street Gang: How we got to Sesame Street and Gravitas’ Sweet river made small firsts on the market at 25 passes each. The two newcomers made meager earnings, bringing in $ 10,000 and $ 8,000 respectively.
All of the Oscar nominated films made their usual marks this week. We’ll see next week if the Oscar material affects the raw trajectory of this spinoff.
Nomadland made $ 89K over the weekend and is expected to eventually see $ 3M at the domestic box office. Nomadland is the Oscar winner for Best Picture at the box office with just over $ 2.5 million currently, beating the winner for Best Picture 2009 The Hurt Locker which grossed $ 17 million in the United States.
