Betty White turns 99, basks in flurry of affection, kicks off ‘Pet Set’ release – Deadline
To put the icing on the cake, White’s long unreleased series, Pet set, created by and featuring the television icon, will debut on digital and DVD platforms on February 23.
The 39 star-studded half-hours feature other animal-loving icons including Carol Burnett, Mary Tyler Moore, Doris Day, Burt Reynolds, Jimmy Stewart, Shirley Jones, James Brolin and dozens more.
The show aired in syndication from 1971 to 1972 and was produced by White and her husband, Allen Ludden. It was canceled when its main sponsor, Carnation, decided to spend its advertising budget exclusively on commercials rather than programming.
The talk show had four segments. White would bring out a guest star to introduce her pets, talk about the animal, and then move on to a segment on a selected species. The show would then feature an animal expert and then end with White and occasionally his guests outside with a wild animal, which included a 500-pound Bengal tiger, a black bear, and an Asian elephant.
“If I haven’t told you already, I will now. the Pet set is one of my favorite shows, ”White said. “I am delighted that he is seen again after all these years.”
MPI Media Group has partnered with Darren Wadyko Media and Betty White through its Albets Enterprises banner to release the long-lost 1971 series. It will be available on Apple TV, Google Play, and Prime Video when it first rolls out, with more platforms expected later this year.
For the uninitiated, White’s career began in the TV test days and won him multiple Emmy Awards, thanks to his work on a classic TV like The Golden Girls, the show of Mary Tyler Moore, and Hot in Cleveland, as well as countless appearances in games and talk shows.
Special new DVD features include a behind-the-scenes look at the series, original promo spots, featurettes Betty White: Game Show Goddess and Betty White: queen of television, Betty’s photo album and her public service announcements.
Betty White and Albets Enterprises are replaced by APA.
