Beta movie sells period TV drama ‘Sisi’ to France, Austria – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Beta Film has concluded pre-sales with two major European broadcasters, TF1 in France and ORF in Austria, on the RTL Group series on the iconic Austrian Empress Sissi.

Filming for the six-hour series has just started in the Baltic States and will continue in Austria, Hungary and Germany. Today we can give you a first look at the set. TVNOW plans to launch RTL Group’s streaming service Sissi at the end of this year. New negotiations with several international broadcasters are reportedly underway.

Empress Elisabeth, nicknamed Sisi, whose fictional character was played by Austrian actress Romy Schneider in the 1950s, was a pop star and influencer of her time in the late 19th century, and an icon in Europe and beyond.

The series revolves around the tomboy and the Bavarian princess, who, after her marriage to Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria, must realize that life at the Habsburg court in Vienna is not at all what what she expected. The monarch must fight against the strict and even cruel regime of the court and for its ideals.

The role of Sisi is played by the young Swiss-American actress Dominique Devenport (Night train to Lisbon), while Emperor Franz is portrayed by German Jannik Schümann (Center of my world, Charity). Désirée Nosbusch, awarded by Grimme (Bad banks) in the role of Archduchess Sophie, the stepmother of the young Empress, and Julia Stemberger (Savage republic) like his mother Ludovica and Tanja Schleiff (Fall) like the famous Countess Esterhazy, among others.

Beta manages global sales for Sissi, which is produced by Story House Pictures (Andreas Gutzeit and Jens Freels) and Satel Film (Heinrich Ambrosch and Bettina Kuhn) as co-producers. Andreas Gutzeit also works as an editor, with Robert Krause and supported by Ela Hell. Sven Bohse (Dark woods) directs the series; Hauke ​​Bartel is RTL’s executive producer, along with Markus Böhlke and Sylke Poensgen. The show is supported by the German Federal Film Office of the FFA and the Bavarian Film and Television Fund FFF.
