A television war has broken out between the UK and China. Just days after the UK revoked the broadcasting license for the Chinese state-backed network CGTN, Beijing retaliated today by banning BBC World News.
According to CGTN, China’s National Radio and Television Administration said BBC World News “gravely violated the regulations” after “violating requirements that news reporting must be true and impartial, and undermined national interests and China’s ethnic solidarity ”.
Reuters reporters in China reported that the BBC World News channel had already gone dark in the country following the ruling. The information service in English is not widely available, but it is accessible in some hotels and houses.
