Aquarius Films and Anonymous Content Partner in ‘The Subjugate’ Series – Deadline

Aquarius Films has acquired the development and production rights for the dystopian sci-fi thriller novel, The subjugated, and partners with Anonymous Content to produce a TV adaptation.

Written by award-winning Amanda Bridgeman on Subjugated The book series is set in 2040, watching a series of murders send shockwaves through the religious community of Bountiful. Two homicide detectives head to town to investigate the crimes, which meet with nothing but open hostility. While the obvious suspects are “The Subjugates” – violent offenders who are turned into city officials, known as Serenes – disturbing wrinkles appear in the case, as detectives embark on parallel investigations.

Aquarius Films founders Angie Fielder and Polly Staniford will produce the long-form series, alongside Luke Rivett and Ryan Cunningham of Anonymous Content.

The subjugated explores the topical themes of rehabilitation, recidivism and technological advancements in a gripping sci-fi thriller for the near future and provides the perfect raw material for a compelling television series, ”said Fielder and Stanford. “We have always been huge fans of the work produced by Anonymous Content and we are delighted to partner with Luke and Ryan to bring to life the rich and complex world that Amanda Bridgeman has created in her novels.

Rivett and Cunningham added, “Amanda has created an incredibly complex world that examines the connections between good and evil and what happens when the lines between the two are blurred. We’re excited to be working with Angie, Polly and the Aquarius team to bring Amanda’s novel to life on screen.

Fielder is an Oscar nominated producer, whose credits include Lion, starring Nicole Kidman, Dev Patel and Rooney Mara, while Staniford has produced films like Vertical Entertainment’s Berlin Syndrome. Recent series produced by Anonymous Content include the winner of the Peabody Prize Dickinson (which recently returned for its second season on Apple TV +), Hulu’s Golden Globe-nominated limited series Catch-22 and Apple TV + crime drama Home before dark, among others.

Aquarius Films is an award-winning, Australian-based production company with a reputation for producing high-quality, premium films and TV series. The company is currently in production on the SBS miniseries Unusual suspects, with Miranda Otto and Aina Dumlao, and Parent up, which she produces for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Other notable Aquarius Film feature credits include Gregor Jordan Dirt music, with Garrett Hedlund, Kelley Macdonald and David Wenham, and the winner of the Kieran Darcy-Smith Prize wish you were Here, with Joel Egerton and Teresa Palmer. On the television side, he also produced a half-hour-long comedy-drama The other guy for the Stan and Hulu subscription service in Australia, as well as the sci-fi thriller YA The unlisted, for Netflix and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
