Apple allows updated version of Talk to be returned to iPhone app store – fidgetcube

Apple will allow the social media app Talk to return to the iPhone App Store, according to members of Congress who protested the removal of the controversial service in January.

Speak then became a gathering place for supporters of former President Donald Trump, including insurgents who attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6 in an attempt to overturn the election results. Amazon Web Services has also refused to host Parler, claiming that persistent violent content in its posts violates contractual terms of service. The company backed by Rebecca Mercer has since found a new CEO and an alternative host – called SkySilk, a web infrastructure company based outside Los Angeles.

Apple had similar issues with Amazon Web Services, but said it was only suspending Talking, not banning it permanently, and the situation could be “cured” if Talking added moderation and removed violent content. (Apple said in its letter that more than 30,000 apps were removed in 2020 over objectionable user-generated content issues.) Google also removed Talk from its Google Play Store.

An Apple review panel has approved the changes to Talk and said it will approve an updated version of the site.

“Apple expects the Talking app update to be available immediately after it is released by Talking,” wrote Timothy Powderly, senior director of government affairs at Apple, in the letter to Rep. Ken Buck and Senator Mike Lee. (see below). .

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the move, including in an interview with Kara Swisher on her podcast To balance.

“You cannot incite violence or allow people to incite violence. You can’t allow hate speech and so on. And they had gone from moderation to the inability to moderate. But we gave them a chance to fix that. And they either were unable to or didn’t. And so we had to withdraw them. Now that said… I hope they come back. Because we work hard to attract people to the store, not to keep people from leaving the store. And so, I hope they put the moderation in it to be on the store and come back, because I think it’s better to have more social media than to have less.
