Annecy ‘My Favorite War’ Prize Winner Comes to EastWest Filmdistribution – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Vienna-based sales company EastWest Filmdistribution takes global rights My favorite war, the animated documentary that won an award at Annecy last year, where it premiered. The film is eligible for this year’s Oscars and Annies.

Based on the childhood memories of director Ilze Burkovska-Jacobsen, who created her own escape from the totalitarian regime that was Soviet Latvia, the film targets its pro-democracy message to a global adult audience using cut-out animations and documentation elements.

The story is as such: discovering the remains of a German soldier in his sandbox, the young Ilze wonders what is buried under state propaganda and sets off on a journey of discovery.

EastWest CEO Sasha Wieser said of the acquisition: “We rarely consider acquiring animated feature films, but My favorite war is unique in many ways. It is both moving and informative, charming and disturbing, beautiful and frankly frank – a truly original and timely edifying account of the human cost of totalitarianism. We are delighted to have the opportunity to present this artistic gem to audiences around the world. “

My favorite war Latvian producer Guntis Trekteris (Ego Media) added: “Despite the pandemic, in 2020 the film successfully toured festivals, winning numerous awards in Europe, Asia and North America. We hope the collaboration with our longtime partner EastWest Filmdistribution will bring it to audiences around the world just as theaters reopen.
