Animal Advocates Rip CA Candidate for Governor John Cox’s Bear Stunt – Deadline

Republican gubernatorial nominee businessman John Cox kicked off his campaign in Sacramento on Tuesday, but his live political stunt involving a bear drew fierce criticism.

Cox spoke to reporters in the California capital about the need to replace Gavin Newsom, whom he called “beauty,” with himself, “a beast,” he said. This was punctuated by a literal 1,000-pound bear strolling selflessly behind Cox.

“Beautiful politicians have failed in California,” Cox said. “We need big, beastly changes to back it up. I’m going to cut taxes, make California more affordable, and shake up Sacramento. “

PETA weighed in tonight with a tweet saying, “It’s a shame that @BeastJohnCox is exploiting a bear for advertising. Wild animals should be left alone, not confined to an enclosure and taken for events. They are not props.

Senator Ben Hueso, D-San Diego, expressed his outrage at the stunt. “I was disappointed and dismayed to see hopeful Gubernatorial John Cox parade a living bear at his press conference in Sacramento today,” Hueso said.

“Two years ago I introduced SB 313, which was enacted and banned the use of wild animals in circuses. While the letter of the law dealt with circuses, the spirit of the law prevented animals, such as Kodiak bears, from being used in events as props, like the Mr. Cox publicity stunt, ”continued the senator.

Senate Bill 313 was enacted in 2019 by Newsom and protects wild or exotic animals by prohibiting anyone from sponsoring, directing, operating or participating in a circus that uses any animal other than a domestic dog, cat domestic or domestic horse.

Judie Mancuso, founder and CEO of political advocacy group Social Compassion in Legislation, also had choice words for Cox.

“It was horrible to see the blatant disrespect for wildlife on the part of the political candidate, John Cox, today,” she said. “Californians love their wildlife, and the last thing we want to see is a 1,000-pound bear dragged across the state to somehow compensate for the muscles of a politician he longs to own.

Cox claimed the bear is tame, well-groomed, and would die in the wild.

“We made sure everything about this bear was taken care of to the fullest,” he said.

Cox plans to continue a bus tour to six cities this week.

Newsom faces a possible recall election this fall – after a 30-day period for people to withdraw their signatures on recall petitions – after a concerted effort to collect signatures found at least 1.6 million. Newsom defeated Cox in the 2018 gubernatorial race by nearly three million votes.

The Republican challengers field includes Olympian Caitlyn Jenner, former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and former Rep. Doug Ose.
