Amazon Prime Video, WNBA in Exclusive Multi-Year Streaming Agreement – Deadline

Amazon and the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) announced a multi-year agreement granting Prime Video exclusive worldwide broadcast rights to 16 WNBA games per season, as well as the Commissioner’s Cup game on Sunday, August 12.

Prime Video’s WNBA coverage begins Saturday, May 29 in New York City with Atlanta Dream vs. New York Liberty. The deal, with one WNBA game each week during the regular season, marks the first time that Prime Video has owned exclusive global broadcast rights to a professional women’s sports league. Saturday’s game is also the service’s first for exclusive international broadcast rights to any professional basketball game.

Unlike Amazon’s NFL exclusive, this is a partial season deal, according to its Yankee broadcasts, but a sign that it continues to embark on live sports broadcasting. The pact gives the WNBA a reliable source of cash.

Amazon Prime Video accelerates NFL push, will debut exclusively Thursday night in 2022, a year ahead of schedule

“The WNBA is one of the world’s premier professional sports leagues and serves as an inspiration to millions of aspiring young athletes around the world,” said Marie Donoghue, vice president of Global Sports Video at Amazon. “I am delighted that we are bringing these exceptional athletes and games to Prime Video.”

The first nine games broadcast on Prime Video this season are part of the inaugural WNBA Commissioner’s Cup, which is an in-season competition that designates a portion of regular season games – 10 tag games – as a Cup. The team from each conference with the best record in the designated Cup games will then compete for the Commissioner Cup championship and a special prize.

The Commissioner’s Cup championship game will be shown exclusively on Prime Video on August 12, following the conclusion of the Summer Olympics. The remaining games on Prime Video take place in the second half of the regular season after the conclusion of the Commissioners Cup.

“Innovative competitions require exceptional partners, and we are thrilled that Amazon is streaming a WNBA Game of the Week and our first Commissioner’s Cup championship this year,” said WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. “We are grateful for Amazon’s support to increase visibility and expand our fans’ access to more games on more devices, and we are honored to be the first professional basketball league to air on Prime Video. as part of a Prime subscription. “

The WNBA on Prime Video will be available on hundreds of compatible devices worldwide as part of a Prime subscription (excluding China, Japan, UK, Italy, UK ‘Spain, Finland and Germany). Prime Video games will be distributed to participating teams ‘markets through the teams’ local distribution partners.
