Alan Taylor to helm TV adaptation of fantasy novel ‘Stone Junction’ – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Alan Taylor swaps 1970s New Jersey for 1980s California for his next project.

The director, whose The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark is slated for release in September, is directing a TV adaptation of the fantasy novel Stone Junction.

Taylor knows the fantasy world well, having directed numerous episodes of Game of thrones and Thor: The Dark World.

The adaptation is produced by Peter Luo’s Starlight Media, who supported Crazy Rich Asians and Midway, and written by The man of the high castle and The Electric Dreams of Philip K. Dick writers Kalen Egan and Travis Sentell. Taylor, Luo and Brandan Dennehy will produce.

Based on Jim Dodge’s book, Stone junction takes place in a mythological California of the early 1980s, portrays the fantastic childhood and adolescence of Daniel Pearse, and culminates in his lifelong battle against oblivion. Like Tom Sawyer passing the Kool-Aid Electric Acid Test or Harry Potter freewheeling on Easy Rider’s endless highways, it’s a great tale of rebellion, romance, revenge and magic, woven into one coming of age story. Under the guidance of his magical mentor, Volta, young Daniel may well be the greatest hope for a future free from the oppressive forces that seemed to have invaded our very lives.

The book was published by Grove Press in 1998 and is Dodge’s third novel after Fup and Not Fade Away.

This is Starlight’s latest TV project after opting for Rebecca F. Kuang’s trilogy of fantasy novels: Poppy War, Republic of Dragons and The Burning God.

Taylor, who has a first contract with Starlight, is represented by UTA and Circle of Confusion.

He said, “Stone junction is a classic hero tale set in a world as real as a trailer park but as fantastic as a galaxy far, far away. It’s as if Star Wars took place in 1984, Bakersfield and the Jedi were a bunch of crooks and ragged criminals. It portrays nothing less than the battle for the soul of the future – and it could not be more timely for our current troubled world ”.

Luo added, “Alan is a fearless talent who excels at epic storytelling and has an amazing vision for this series that audiences around the world will truly appreciate. The source material is a daring and intelligent adventure that audiences crave more than ever. We can’t wait to get down to work on creating something special. “
