Filmmaker Aditya Chopra is donating the entire 50th anniversary budget of Yash Raj Films (YRF) to help the industry and daily workers, as the country grapples with the deadly second wave of Covid-19.
YRF turned 50 in 2020 and Chopra intended to celebrate the milestone on a global scale. With the second wave of the pandemic putting an end to the film industry again, he decided to donate a budget of YRF 50 for the cause.
The powerhouse is also launching a new initiative that will see its foundation provide cooked meals to thousands of frontline workers in Goregaon and also feed people in Andheri’s quarantine centers, from the kitchen at YRF Studios.
The latest move follows Chopra’s launch of the Yash Chopra Saathi initiative last week, aimed at providing financial support to thousands of workers in the film industry.
“YRF will not be celebrating its 50th anniversary, even if things return to normal later, because Aditya Chopra has decided to divert all that funds for Covid relief work. It is clear that the funds must be used urgently to restart the industry first, as it has been hit the hardest because of the virus, ”said a trade source.
The source added that Aditya wants to focus only on helping industry and fraternity which has also been a support system at YRF for the past 50 years.
As part of this initiative, the Yash Raj Foundation will oversee the direct transfer of benefits of Rs 5,000 to women and senior workers in the industry, and distribute ration kits to workers for a family of four for a month, by through their partner NGO Youth Feed. India.
Recently, YRF wrote to Maharashtra’s chief minister asking if they could buy vaccines for the 30,000 registered film industry workers. YRF added that it would cover all expenses related to the vaccination of workers.
