ABC handed over a pilot order to National parks, a drama written by Yellowstone star Kevin Costner, Flash Aaron Helbing and author Jon Baird.
The hour-long drama originates from Costner’s Territory Pictures Entertainment, as well as 20th Television and A + E Studios.
This is the latest Disney-owned Network Drama Pilot Order for one of last year’s projects that was incorporated into Cycle Two development following a similar move for medical drama. Sorting. Last week, the network also handed over pilot orders for Queens, a drama about a 90s hip hop group by Zahir McGhee, and Epic, of the team behind Once upon a time.
National parks, formerly known as IS B, follows a small group of elite national park service officers as they solve crimes while protecting the parks – which, while being known for their beautiful scenery, also attract a wide range of criminal activity.
Costner, Helbing and Baird write and produce executives, while Rod Lake, Ivan Cohen, Ken Halsband produce executives through Territory Pictures, and Barry Jossen and Tana Jamieson produce executives through A + E Studios. Helbing and Baird co-wrote The explorers guide novel with Costner. Helbing, who was recently showrunner on Knightfall, will act as showrunner for National parks.
Pilot controls and ABC 2021 series
Underground and Power Director Anthony Hemingway will direct the pilot and also run the production through his banner Anthony Hemingway Productions. A + E Studios, at the origin of the project, produced alongside the production studio Disney.
This is Costner’s second major television series in recent years; he plays and executes the production of Paramount Network Yellowstone, entering its fourth season.
Kevin Costner said, “Our partners at ABC, 20th Television and A + E Studios have provided me with a great environment to step out of my comfort zone and offer something special.”
Costner is replaced by WME. Helbing is taken over by David Matlof at Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof + Fishman. Hemingway is replaced by WME, Gotham Group and attorney Tom Hoberman.
