Another virtual ceremony, another missing red carpet? Not for the Oscars. Just as the Academy somewhat controversially brought the nominees to the show into real life, rather than attempting the all-virtual shows we’ve seen for the Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG awards, the Oscars kicked off in beauty Sunday with a real red carpet. Usually the pinnacle of red carpet show of the year, the Oscars have done their best to bring pre-pandemic-level glamor to tonight’s awards at Union Station in Los Angeles.
Promising young woman writer and director Emerald Fennell wore a sheer pastel floral sequin dress. Fennell likes to come up with character descriptions for her rug looks and told Rancic of it, “Tonight I’m Susan, your pottery teacher who has a business opportunity for you that’s absolutely not a pyramid scheme. . “

Diane Warren looked chic in a Valentino sequin turtleneck with a white suit with matching boots. “It helps to know [singer] Laura Pausini, ”Warren told Giuliana Rancic of E! At the Oscar pre-show. “I’ve never been dressed by a designer before.” Also in a white suit like Warren was Tiara Thomas, who like Warren is in the running for Best Original Song. And white seemed to be the color of the day, as nominee for supporting actress Maria Bakalova chose a bespoke white Louis Vuitton dress, which contained an incredible 100 yards of tulle in the skirt.
There were also spectacular costumes among the men, with Judas and the Black MessiahDaniel Kaluuya in an elegant charcoal Bottega Veneta look; Colman Domingo in an intense bright pink suit, with crystals embellishing the jacket; and One night in MiamiLeslie Odom Jr in a gold suit with matching shirt and tie. And came Sound of metal Supporting actor candidate Paul Raci in a black-on-black suit with an ornate collar and pin and matching black nail polish.
Minari 9-year-old star Alan Kim wore a custom Thom Browne cropped suit with a fun youthful twist: black and white knee-high socks. Her co-star Yuh-Yung Youn wore a subtle black diamond-patterned short-sleeved dress, while Yeri Han wore a high-necked scarlet dress with oversized buttons on the bodice.
Hillbilly Elegy‘s Glenn Close, with her eighth nomination this year, wore an Armani Privé beaded electric blue dress over navy silk pants with purple leather gloves, which the designer included as a tribute to her mother who always wore gloves. “I feel great,” Close told Rancic. “My shoes are comfortable, [the carpet] is not two kilometers long, which is beautiful.
